Most often for a military installation the common and familiar topographic-style map can only be useful for a small section of the map, like a training area or range. In reality, installations themselves are small cities, sometimes dense with structures. In this case, city-style mapping made familiar to all by Google Maps, can serve a greater use to an installation.

Most installation mapping data is regulated by the SDSFIE data model. This is a data standard by which all features from runways to utilities are mapped into. It defines the attributes and geometries of spatial data on a given installation. Using this data model, we can standardize cartography for many locations around the world by defining a common set of spatial features (common installation picture).

We have created a more appealing map-style using the SDSFIE data model and some sample data for an installation and its surrounding area. Since this data usually carries restrictions for non official use, we have used OpenStreetMap data for our sample area. You may preview this style we have uploaded as a tile service to ArcGIS Online by clicking here.
